At a glance.
Kempt is a sandboxed macOS application. It only reads or modifies folders you explicitly select, processes them on your device, and does not communicate with any Wrume server. The summary below maps to the privacy details Apple asks app developers to declare on the App Store.
- Data collected by Wrume
- None. Kempt does not have a backend and makes no network requests from the app.
- Data linked to you
- None.
- Data used to track you
- None.
- Third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs
- None embedded in the app.
- Account or sign-in
- Not required. Kempt has no account system.
- Files Kempt can read or modify
- Only folders you explicitly select via macOS file dialogs, Finder Services, or Quick Actions. Enforced by the macOS App Sandbox.
1. Who this applies to.
This policy describes how Wrume Ltd (“Wrume”, “we”, “us”) handles information in connection with the macOS application Kempt (bundle identifier com.wrume.kempt). Kempt is a productivity utility that helps you organise files in folders you choose on your Mac.
Wrume Ltd is registered in England and Wales under company number 14220809.
2. How Kempt processes your files.
Kempt only ever touches folders you explicitly select — either by choosing them in the app, by invoking a Finder Service (such as Organise with Kempt), or by triggering a Quick Action. The macOS App Sandbox enforces this: Kempt is technically incapable of reading or modifying files outside the locations you have granted it.
All organisation, preview, undo, and statistics features run locally on your Mac. File contents are not uploaded, copied to third-party services, or transmitted off your device by Kempt. Kempt does not make any network requests to Wrume servers.
Kempt's in-app categorisation (sometimes called “AI categorisation”) is a small on-device keyword matcher. It looks at file names and extensions on your Mac and assigns them to categories like Images, Documents, or Receipts. No file names, contents, or categories are sent to any cloud service.
3. What Kempt stores on your Mac.
The following data is created and kept inside Kempt's sandboxed app container on your Mac. None of it is transmitted to Wrume.
Preferences and settings
Things like default conflict handling, organisation mode, log level, notification sound, and whether to launch at login. Stored in macOS UserDefaults inside Kempt's sandbox.
Scheduled tasks, custom categories, and profiles
Folder paths and rules you create for recurring organisation runs, your custom category definitions, and named folder profiles. Stored locally as JSON in UserDefaults.
Security-scoped folder bookmarks
When you grant Kempt access to a folder, macOS issues a sandbox bookmark so the app can re-access that exact folder on later launches without re-prompting. The bookmark is stored on your Mac and is meaningful only to Kempt on this device.
Recent operation history (for Undo)
Kempt records the file moves it made in your last run so you can undo them. This stays on your Mac and is overwritten by the next run.
Organisation statistics
Aggregate counts shown on the Stats screen — total files organised, run count, file extensions handled, and per-day counts. Computed and stored entirely on your device. Never sent anywhere.
Diagnostic logs
Kempt uses Apple's unified logging (os_log) at the level you choose in Settings. These logs live on your Mac and are only visible to you (e.g. in Console.app). Kempt does not collect or upload them.
You can clear this data at any time by using Reset all settings inside Kempt, or by removing the app — macOS will delete the app's sandbox container with it.
4. macOS permissions Kempt requests.
Kempt requests the minimum macOS capabilities required for its features. Each one can be reviewed or revoked in System Settings (under Privacy & Security or Notifications).
User-selected files
Kempt declares com.apple.security.files.user-selected.read-write so it can move files inside folders you pick. The macOS App Sandbox prevents Kempt from touching anything outside what you explicitly select.
Apple Events to Finder
Used only to integrate with Finder Services and Quick Actions ("Organise with Kempt", "Quick Organise by Type", etc.). Scripting access is scoped to com.apple.finder; Kempt cannot drive other apps.
Notifications
Kempt asks for notification permission once via the standard macOS prompt so it can tell you when an organisation run finishes. You can change or revoke this in System Settings → Notifications. Notification content stays on your device.
Launch at login
Off by default. If you turn it on, Kempt registers itself with macOS via SMAppService so it can start when you log in. Toggling it off unregisters it.
Kempt does not request access to Photos, Camera, Microphone, Contacts, Calendar, Reminders, Location, Health, or any other personal data category in macOS.
5. Cloud-synced folders (iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.).
Kempt can organise folders that happen to live inside a cloud-synced location, as long as those folders are available locally on your Mac. When Kempt moves a file inside such a folder, your cloud provider then syncs that change just like any other file change you would make in Finder. Kempt itself does not upload or transmit your files; what (if anything) leaves your Mac is governed by the cloud service's own sync behaviour and its privacy policy.
6. Analytics, advertising, and tracking.
Kempt does not include any analytics, advertising, attribution, or behavioural tracking SDKs. There is no telemetry sent to Wrume, and no third party receives information about how you use Kempt from inside the app.
If we ever add optional, user-controllable diagnostics or crash reporting in a future version, we will describe exactly what is collected here and ask you to opt in inside the app.
7. Apple and the Mac App Store.
When you download Kempt from the Mac App Store, Apple processes information related to your purchase, download, and crash diagnostics in line with Apple's privacy policy. As an App Store developer, Wrume may see aggregated or limited metrics that Apple makes available (for example anonymous unit counts or aggregated crash reports). We do not control Apple's practices, and we cannot match this information back to you as an individual.
8. When you contact us.
If you email us for help or feedback (for example at hello@wrume.com), we receive whatever you put in your message: typically your email address, subject line, and the contents of your email, including any attachments or screenshots you choose to send. We use that information only to respond to you and to improve Kempt, unless a longer retention period is required by law.
You can also reach us through our general contact page. The same approach applies: we process what you send us to handle your request and nothing more.
9. Your rights (UK and EEA).
Because Kempt itself does not collect personal data, the only personal information Wrume typically holds about you is what you voluntarily send us through support channels. Where UK GDPR or EU GDPR applies, we process those messages on the basis of our legitimate interests in operating and improving our products and/or to take steps at your request when you ask us for help.
Depending on where you live, you may have rights to access, correct, delete, restrict, or object to processing of personal data we hold about you, and to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority (in the UK, the Information Commissioner's Office). To exercise rights related to information you have sent us, contact hello@wrume.com.
10. Children.
Kempt is a general-purpose productivity tool and is not directed at children. The app itself does not collect personal information from anyone. The only way a child could share personal data with Wrume is by emailing our support address; if you believe a child has sent us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.
The minimum age at which a person can consent to the processing of their personal data without parental authorisation varies by country (for example, 13 in the United Kingdom and United States, and between 13 and 16 across the EEA under Article 8 of the GDPR). Where you are below that age in your country, please ask a parent or guardian to contact us on your behalf.
11. International users.
Wrume Ltd is based in the United Kingdom. If you contact us from outside the UK, the limited information you send (for example, support email content) will be handled by us in the UK. Because Kempt itself does not transmit your files or usage data to Wrume, no cross-border transfer of that data is performed by the app.
12. Changes to this policy.
We may update this policy when Kempt or our practices change. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page will change when we publish a revision. For material changes that affect what data is processed, we will update Kempt's App Store listing and, where appropriate, surface a note in the app itself.
13. Contact.
